When sweating becomes dangerous at night

At night you wake up from sleep. Your shirt sticks to your upper body, and your bed sheet is soaked through - typical of heavy sweating at night. They freeze, wearily change their clothes and go back to sleep. The next day you feel exhausted, but no longer sweat. Only the next night do you wake up in a pool of sweat. If you frequently sweat profusely at night, you should see a doctor to clarify the causes. Most causes of night sweats in men are harmless - but they can also be a symptom of serious illness. "Suddenly increased sweating at night without physical exertion should trigger a visit to the doctor," confirms Professor Dr. Christiane Bayerl. She is a dermatologist and director of the Clinic for Dermatology and Allergology at the Wiesbaden Skin Tumor Center at the Helios-Dr.-Horst-Schmidt Clinics in Wiesbaden. Possible causes of night sweats

First of all, there are a number of possible causes of night sweats that are harmless: These include a bedroom that is too warm, a blanket that is too thick or clothing that is too warm. The body tries to cool down - and in return it produces more sweat. The heat builds up under the blanket, so you sweat more and more until you finally wake up.

A little sweat is normal and not pathological: You sweat, for example, in the sauna or while exercising. If people sweat excessively during the day without having previously exerted themselves physically, doctors speak of hyperhidrosis. Many people sweat particularly heavily on the palms of the hands, armpits or feet. But this is independent of night sweats: Those who sweat heavily at night often have no problems with it during the day. Night sweats also form mainly on the upper body and head. Mental health problems can make sweating worse

Mental health problems can also cause you to sweat profusely at night. This could be stress at work or in private life, for example. Some mental illnesses can also promote night sweats. These include anxiety disorders in particular. This is especially true when night sweats are cold sweats. However, heavy sweat often feels cold when you wake up and your clothes are soggy, so it is often difficult to distinguish between them at night.

In addition, some medications can also cause profuse sweating at night as a side effect. These include, for example, some antidepressants and agents that are used to reduce fever. If you stop taking these medications or change them, sweating should also decrease during the night.

Night sweats in men: thyroid may be to blame

However, there are some diseases that mainly manifest themselves when the body sweats excessively at night. "What is particularly noticeable is the sudden occurrence of night sweats beyond what is otherwise known under a warm duvet," says Bayerl. Up to 1.5 liters of sweat per night is normal. However, you rarely notice it, as the sweating spreads over the whole body and throughout the night. On the other hand, if you keep waking up completely sodden, you should watch it.

For example, night sweats in men can be caused by a metabolic disorder. "This can be an indication of a malfunction of the thyroid gland," explains the dermatologist. Profuse sweating occurs particularly in the case of hyperfunction. Such sweats can also show diabetes. You should be particularly aware of this when you are very thirsty, so that you have to go to the toilet several times at night.

Tumor diseases can show up through sweating

Most of the causes of night sweats are completely or comparatively harmless. But some serious illnesses can also make themselves felt through night sweats. "Night sweats are an alarm signal that, in the worst case scenario, can also indicate a tumor," says Bayerl.

Cancer types such as leukemia or lymphoma in particular can lead to profuse sweating at night. Usually, however, other symptoms also occur. These include, in particular, weight loss and attacks of fever. Even those who observe all of these symptoms in themselves are not sure that they have cancer - but it makes sense to clarify that.

Have a medical check-up for excessive sweating

If night sweats appear suddenly and very strongly, you should see a doctor to rule out such serious illnesses or to be able to treat them early.

The doctor will then search for the cause of the night sweats. He will also want to know how long night sweats began, how often it occurs and how strong the sweats are. "The doctor will first rule out a tumor," said Bayerl. "The examination also includes a blood sample and, if necessary, an ultrasound of the thyroid gland."

Most causes of night sweats are harmless

Often, such an examination cannot find a physical cause for night sweats. In medical terms, one speaks of "idiopathic night sweats", i.e. sweat without a recognizable physical cause. Then, in addition to stress, various causes are conceivable - and thus also various approaches to countering night sweats.

"Of course, the bedroom shouldn't be overheated or cooler than the living area," recommends Bayerl. "In addition, the winter blanket should be replaced with a summer blanket in good time." If sweating does not subside, it could be due to the diet: Those who eat heavy meals in the evening or cook with hot spices can also increase their sweat flow at night. A change in eating habits could bring relief here. If stress is the cause, targeted relaxation such as autogenic training or moderate endurance training can help shut down the body.
