On the occasion of a marriage, the engaged couple have the following options for their future name:

Common family name

The name of a spouse can be determined to be the common family name. If a name consisting of several parts is used for this, the entire name or parts of it can be used.

A family name acquired in a previous marriage can also become the common family name in a subsequent marriage. However, a double name from a previous marriage cannot become the common family name in another marriage.

Double name

The spouses can also choose a double name made up of the surnames of both as the common surname. In order to avoid confusing name chains, you can only choose from Name consisting of at most two parts to be selected.

  • Mr. Müller-Zepelin marries Mrs. Berger-Mayer. Common surname is said to be Zepelin. Mr. Müller-Zepelin will in future be called Zepelin. Ms. Berger-Mayer can in future be called Zepelin-Berger, Berger-Zepelin, Zepelin-Mayer or Mayer-Zepelin.
  • Mr. Müller-Zepelin marries Mrs. Berger-Mayer. Both agree that they have a (common) name made up of their names. You can create any double name from the name parts "Müller", "Zepelin", "Berger" and "Mayer" (e.g. Müller-Mayer; Zepelin-Berger, Mayer-Zepelin etc.).

If a spouse has opted for a double name, this must be used from now on (e.g. in the passport and driver's license as well as when signing contracts).

Declarations regarding legal names are to be submitted to the respective registry office.

Spouses who do not determine a common surname keep their previous surnames. However, it must then be determined which family name the children together should have. The family name of a parent can be determined to be the child's family name.
