When pain dominates everything, normal everyday life is difficult to imagine. But experts are certain: there are ways to prevent it. Proper nutrition often plays a role. KURIER reveals which foods help.

The problem: some people react strongly to various ingredients in food. According to a report by the “Apotheken-Umschau”, these include the proteins histamine and tyramine, which are found in cheese and citrus fruits, among other things. The curing salt nitrite can also cause headaches - it is found in various meat and sausage products.

"We even know the term hot dog headache," said Professor Hartmut Göbel, chief physician at the pain clinic in Kiel, the magazine. “After consuming cured sausage products, severe headaches can occur.” The flavor enhancer glutamate is also suspect. "Glutamate acts like a messenger substance in the organism and possibly causes headaches by overactivating the nerve cells in the brain," says the pain expert.

Migraines: A constant blood sugar level prevents headaches

To prevent headaches, for example, it is important to eat regularly. “The decisive factor is not so much what the person concerned eats, but how often and how regularly. A constant blood sugar level without large fluctuations in the course of the day has been proven to prevent migraine attacks or reduce the frequency, ”says Göbel. And: Regular drinking is just as important, at least 1.5 liters per day. But: not necessarily alcohol. According to the expert, especially sweet alcoholic drinks such as lovely wines trigger attacks more often.

But there are also foods that are supposed to prevent it. If you like to eat bread, it would be better to avoid white bread, wheat and milk rolls and croissants. According to experts, sourdough breads and baked goods without yeast are better. When it comes to side dishes, peeled rice and durum wheat noodles are said to be less good, wholegrain noodles and wholegrain rice are better.

There are also differences in fruit and vegetables. For example, some types of fruit contain chemical compounds that are converted into nitric oxide in the body. The substance expands the blood vessels, which prevents the pain from developing in the first place. We recommend apples, apricots, blueberries, lingonberries, cherries, currants and nectarine melons also contain a lot of water. Some types of nuts and fruit should also help, including macadamia nuts, chestnuts, pine nuts and sunflower seeds.

Food for the pain: stay away from old cheese!

When it comes to drinks, water and herbal teas are always the right choice, and ginger tea should also have a preventive effect. Patients prone to headaches should avoid citrus fruit juices. And: watch out for the cheese too! Many types of cheese that have matured for a longer period of time contain a lot of tyramine, a pain reliever. These include mountain cheese, Camembert, Cheddar, Gruyère, Gorgonzola, Chester and Harz cheese. Anyone with a headache should leave these types of cheese in the cheese counter.
