What is the best star telescope

Telescope comparison 2021

  • Before you buy a very expensive telescope, you should know the difference between a refractor telescope and a reflector telescope. One technique collects and scatters light with mirrors, the other with lenses.
  • Find out which telescopes are suitable for beginners and what the focal length means. Choose children's telescopes that are robust and easy to use for the little ones.
  • Even without an instruction manual and without literature on astronomy, the clear view of the night sky is a great pleasure. However, if you know all the setting options, you will be able to see all planets faster and more effectively in an impressive magnification.

If you want to study the moon and the stars, planets, nebulae and entire galaxies in the night sky, you need a telescope. For sky observation there are on the market Star telescopes, mirror telescopes, refractor telescopes and many more variants. But what should you look for in a telescope for beginners? What is the meaning of terms such as focal length, magnification or light collection?

In our telescope comparison 2021 we answer the most important questions. We also classify the different ones Telescopes for beginners, advanced and experts.

1. Why does the functioning of the telescope depend on the type and technology?

A telescope usually consists of a tripod, a mount and an instrument.

Depending on the structure of the telescope, use the telescopesdifferent techniquesto make distant objects in the night sky clearly visible to the human eye.

Basically there are telescopes that we set up in our four walls by the window or with which we observe the stars in the wild, from the following components:

  • Telescopic tripod (usually three-legged)
  • Mount
  • instrument

Inside, on the other hand, telescopes for domestic use are in two types of telescopes divided according to the optics used:

  1. Refractor telescope
  2. Reflector telescope

A refractor telescope is a telescope that could also be referred to as a lens telescope. Through a lens becomes the incident light bundled with the help of a lens. They are said to have the best imaging performance and are particularly good as entry-level telescopes. With them you can observe not only the moon and the planets, but also the sun.

Danger: Never look into the magnified sun without a special solar filter in the telescope. Because even in summer, looking into the sun during the day can be painful. You are probably familiar with the warnings that are communicated over and over again during solar eclipses. Without a filter from the manufacturer, you must not look at the sun with a telescope.

Reflector telescopes are often referred to as mirror telescopes. The bundling of the light works through here a lens with a mirror. The light is bundled via the curved mirror and directed to the eyepiece via additional secondary mirrors.

The term eyepiece describes the part through which you look with the eye. Such eyepieces can also be found in binoculars or a microscope.

Mirror or reflector telescopes are usually cheaper to buy and ideal for observing only faintly visible celestial bodies suitable, as confirmed by telescope tests.

2. Buying advice: Which telescopes should you choose as a beginner or an advanced user?

If you want to become a Skywatcher with your telescope, you should choose the right model right from the start and take some time to practice. Anyone looking through an astronomical telescope for the first time could experience a small disappointment at first.

Train your eyes

In contrast to those of our pets, such as cats, the human eye is not designed at all to see in the dark, since we were not designed as nocturnal creatures. If a large part of the daylight is missing, our eyes need a phase of adjustment in order to still recognize outlines, at least in shades of gray, at night.

So don't be surprised if you see a distorted, cloudy image when looking through the eyepiece. It takes some time and patienceuntil you are able to see properly through the Celestron telescope sooner.

Telescopes with lenses are suitable for beginners, so refractor telescopes are particularly good, as telescope tests have shown. Telescopes for children are also usually equipped with this technology. The devices are robust and the numerous settings can be learned quickly with a little practice and by reading the operating instructions. They can be used to view the moon, planets, nebulae and galaxies.

With telescopes for children and beginners, make sure that Magnifying glasses, star maps and a compass should be included in the scope of delivery.

For advanced Red light for better map reading or an LED viewfinder should not be missing from the accessories. In addition, large openings of 12 inches or about 300 millimeters make sense, which makes handling a little more complex. Refractor telescopes offer higher color purity and are therefore often preferred by fans of amateur astronomy.

3. Why should the best telescope fit the budget and have the right properties?

There is no single, best telescope for everyone. A trained astronomer who otherwise works with the world-famous Hubble telescope will hardly call your personal test winner the best telescope. When choosing a telescope, however, you should pay attention to a few criteria, so that you finally have your favorites in your shopping cart.

3.1. The focal length should match the area of application

The focal length, in conjunction with the opening of the lens, ensures that light is collected and objects are enlarged. Basically, lenses with short focal lengths produce a brighter imagewhich is particularly helpful in astrophotography. The focal lengths of entry-level telescopes are often between 500 and 2,000 mm.

The following table gives a brief overview, when short or long focal lengths are useful:

Observation ofFocal length
Planets like Mars / Saturnlong focal length
Galaxies and nebulaeshort focal length
Astrophotographyshort focal lengths

3.2. What the eyepiece magnification is all about

The eyepiece is the part of the astro telescope that you look through with your eye. Strictly speaking, this is a magnifying glassthrough which the picture is viewed and enlarged at the same time. Therefore, the Skywatcher telescope and other models usually come with several eyepieces that allow different levels of magnification.

If you want to look at galaxies and nebulae with a Bresser or Omegon telescope, you can do so 4 millimeter diameter eyepieces because they allow a wide view. If you want to see the craters on the moon with your own eyes, choose 20 mm and sharpen your eye for the details.

3.3. Why light collection is so important when observing with telescopes

Whether a cheap telescope or an expensive telescope, a branded product or a telescope bargain at Lidl: All models collect the incident light and refract or reflect it. Especially when looking at celestial objects, which in comparison to the moon hardly emit light themselves the collection of light is extremely important.

The telescope opening in mm plays a decisive role here. Because it determines both the resolution and the ability of the telescope to collect light. A rule of thumb: the larger the opening, the more powerful the telescope. A large opening shows nebulae and galaxies better and sharper.

4. Telescope tests: Why does someone who wants to see something in the night sky not come around telescopes?

Never look into the magnified sun without the special solar filter of a telescope.

To actually observe planets, stars and galaxies in the night sky, you simply cannot avoid purchasing a telescope. Of course you can try to look at the twinkling stars as enlarged points with your binoculars - but you will not enjoy any real added value. Even with a telescope, the shining moon is only slightly larger - but you will never see craters and details.

With a bright optics enjoy a much better magnification of the celestial bodies when looking through the telescope. With focal lengths between 1,000 and 2,000 mm, you can enjoy a long and good focal length with which you can zoom in on different planets and the moon.

Who, on the other hand, is deep-sky watching, i.e. the Contemplation of the dark parts of the universe, needs a larger aperture paired with a short focal length.

But environmental factors also play a big role in how well a high quality Orion telescope works. Think in advance, whether you want to look at the sky from your apartment. Because especially in big cities you could have problems with the space at the window or on the balcony.

Experts also speak of the so-called Light pollution in larger cities. Due to the numerous lights, traffic and neon signs, it never gets really dark there, even at night. This makes it much more difficult to observe faint objects in the sky.

We therefore recommend that you also familiarize yourself with the Transportability of telescopes to deal with. Treat yourself to a model with which you can drive to a rural area or at least to the outskirts from time to time in order to make your observations there without disturbing lights.

The advantage lighter and easily transportable models:

  • flexible to use
  • not more expensive to buy
  • also powerful
  • expand the observation radius
  • Stability must be guaranteed

5. How do you become a sky expert with the right accessories?

After setting up the telescope for the first time, you should always take care of the correct setting with the help of the operating instructions. Also the correct one Assembly and assembly of tripod and telescope including the mount is explained therein.

Next to the eyepieces So-called finders are an important telescope accessory. They help beginners to actually find certain objects in the sky on their first attempts. The aforementioned sun filters are only included in the scope of delivery for some manufacturers.

Be sure to treat yourself to a star map or sky map. This indicates, for example, the positions of individual stars that together make up a certain constellation. There are now whole star atlases and also apps with which you can gradually discover the entire sky for yourself.

6. Is there a telescope test winner from Stiftung Warentest?

Unfortunately we could not find a special test of telescopes at Stiftung Warentest. As part of our research, however, we came across a great toy for enthusiastic astronomers. A quick test deals with that "Take away planetarium". This little navigator for constellations analyzes celestial bodies and identifies them at the push of a button. You will then receive information about this on a small display. We think: the perfect companion for on the go.

7. Important questions and answers about telescopes

7.1. Which manufacturers offer telescopes?

Special children's telescopes are particularly robust and easy to use.

Brands such as Celestron and Skywatcher are very popular among reflector telescopes. By contrast, the refractor models from Bresser, Dörr and Omegon are very successful on the market. But also brands like Meade, Orion and Tasco could get good grades with their respective telescopes.

7.2. How far can you see with a telescope?

Anyone who looks into space, in principle, does not look as far as possible, since the universe is infinite - so the current state of research. The question is rather how much light can be collected through a telescope at a great distance. On earth, the horizon limits our view due to the curvature of the earth.

In space, light is the limiting factor. The largest telescopes in the world no longer use their own eyes, but instead let light-collecting, electronic chips do this job.

7.3. Which telescope is suitable for astrophotography?

If you want to take a picture of the moon, you can simply hold a camera or smartphone behind the eyepiece and take a picture. These cameras are integrated in real telescopes for astrophotography. Choose trackable telescopes with equatorial guidance. To get started, choose lenses with 50 mm or a focal length of 134 mm.
