Tata Motors - India's largest automobile manufacturer

Long before European car manufacturers discovered India as a promising growth market, especially for small and compact cars, the Indian Tata Group, which dates back to 1870, used the economic potential offered by the rapidly developing subcontinent. The first in-house developments from Tata

At the beginning of the 1980s, Tata changed more and more from a cooperation partner to a designer who brought its own products and models onto the market. As early as 1971, the Tata engineers had presented their first self-designed injection engine. Barely ten years later, the first trucks from in-house production were added. In the 1990s, the designer finally presented the Tata Sumo and Tata Indica, the first self-developed SUVs and cars. Since then, Tata has established itself as the largest vehicle manufacturer in India. In addition to commercial vehicles, vans and buses, the focus was on car production.

Tata strengthens its international position through acquisitions

But the Indians also increasingly appeared internationally. They bought Daewoo's commercial vehicle division in South Korea and gained a foothold in Europe and North America with the acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover. The goal: The now wide range of its own models should soon be offered on foreign markets. In Europe, Tata initially focused on Italy, Spain or Poland. The Tata Nano small car, which the Indians had already successfully marketed in their home market as the cheapest car in the world, was primarily supposed to take over the door opener function.

Small and compact cars from Tata

The Tata Nano, which has been in production since 2009, also became the manufacturer's entry-level model. Above this was the Tata Indica small car, which had been built since 1998, and was followed a good ten years later by the Tata Vista. The Tata Indigo, presented in 2002 as a hatchback sedan and station wagon, was launched in 2009 by the manufacturer in a new generation under the name Tata Manza as a notchback sedan.

Off-road vehicles and SUVs from Tata

The product range was supplemented by the off-road vehicle Tata Sumo, which followed in 2008 with the Sumo Grande, a new generation of models in the style of the more comfort-oriented Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). The Indians had a large SUV in their range since 1998 with their Tata Safari, which was later joined by the smaller Tata Aria. With the Tata Xenon and the Tata 207, the designer also offered vehicles in the pick-up class.

Tata vans, minibuses and vans

In the commercial vehicle segment, Tata was represented in all weight classes. The Tata Ace pickup truck, which was supplied with different bodies, was the entry-level model in the light classes. The program was rounded off by minibuses from the Tata Magic and Tata Winger series, which had space for seven passengers.
