How bad does it hurt to be verbally abused

Hoffenheim patron Dietmar Hopp on fan screams: "It hurts to be offended"

Patron Dietmar Hopp from Bundesliga soccer club 1899 Hoffenheim has heavily criticized the fans of German champions Borussia Dortmund. “These people should think about what it's like to be called the 'son of a whore' in front of 30,000 stadiums and millions of TV viewers. The bad thing is, you feel totally helpless. Unconscious. I am just a human. Anyone who knew my mother knows that she was a good-hearted woman. It hurts to be offended, ”said Hopp of the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung.

At the Bundesliga game between the Kraichgauer and BVB last Saturday, 1899 employees had once again set up a sound system to drown out the screams against Hopp. Hopp described the action as a "disservice" for Hoffenheim, but does not want to punish the perpetrator too much: "If he loses his job, I would be heartbroken."

Hopp is not yet thinking of resigning because of the persistent insults, but it may be that he will forego one or two home games in the Rhein-Neckar-Arena in the future. “If it gets too bad, I stop going to the stadium. For me, Hoffenheim is not a toy that you lose interest in at some point, but a matter close to my heart. 1899 is not just a Bundesliga team, it also means kicking off life with over 3000 young people, ”said Hopp.

At least after the chaos of the past few days around the noise attack on Wednesday, Hopp was able to look forward to an apology from BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke. Watzke admitted that the hate chants of the Dortmund fans were also the result of his earlier attacks against Hopp and Hoffenheim.

“You always have 100 to 200 completely disturbed people who cannot be caught. I can imagine today that the words I said back then surely gave some crazy people additional wings to see Mr. Hopp critically. I am partly to blame for that, ”said Watzke of SPORT BILD.
