Are hack innovations possible in healthcare

On the weekend of September 20-22, 2019, a hackathon took place in the Careum Auditorium under the motto “innovate.healthcare”. Interdisciplinary teams with members from different industries worked on current problems in the healthcare sector. These were formulated in advance by the co-organizers - the Careum Foundation, the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Sciana network.

From students to clinic directors

A total of 42 participants, mainly from Switzerland, Great Britain and Germany, faced the submitted challenges. Within 48 hours, they worked almost continuously in teams on possible solutions. On Sunday afternoon, the teams had to present their proposals, which were then evaluated by an expert jury.

What was unusual about this event was that the participants came from very different areas and had different experiences. Students and young professionals worked on an equal footing with experienced specialists, clinic directors and other decision-makers from the healthcare sector. The participants were supported by professional coaches such as programmers, designers, 3D printing experts and a “pitch doctor”.

Four prizes awarded

A total of seven teams competed for the prizes for the greatest patient benefit, the greatest health and economic effect and the best innovation. The winners were a team with an app concept for crisis intervention, a team with a prototype device for diagnostics via smartphone and another team with an app concept for preventive health care for employees. The latter was also awarded the audience prize by the participants themselves. The winners received an attractive service package with which they can continue to implement the good approaches that were developed during the weekend in the context of charitable projects.
