Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/1998 of the Commission of 5 November 2015 laying down detailed measures for the implementation of the common basic standards for aviation security (extract)

The following items are prohibited in hand luggage (Appendix 4-C):

Without prejudice to the applicable safety regulations, passengers may not take the following items into security areas or on board an aircraft:

a) Rifles, firearms and other devices designed for firing projectiles - Devices that are or appear to be capable of causing serious injury by firing a projectile, including:

  • Firearms of all kinds, such as pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns,
  • Toy guns, replicas and imitations of firearms that can be mistaken for real weapons,
  • Parts of firearms, excluding telescopic sights,
  • Air pressure and CO2 weapons, such as air, spring and pellet pistols and rifles or so-called "Ball Bearing Guns" (BB Guns),
  • Signal pistols and start pistols,
  • Bows, crossbows and arrows,
  • Launchers for harpoons and spears,
  • Slingshots and catapults;

b) Stunning devices - Devices specifically designed to numb or immobilize, including:

  • Items for shock stunning, such as stun guns, tasers and stun wands,
  • Apparatus for stunning and killing animals,
  • Incapacitating and disabling chemicals, gases and sprays, such as irritant gas, pepper sprays, capsicum sprays, tear gas, acid sprays and animal repellent sprays;

c) Pointed or sharp objects - pointed or sharp objects that could cause serious injury, including:

  • Chopping tools such as axes, hatchets and cleavers,
  • Ice axes and ice picks,
  • Razor blades,
  • Box cutter,
  • Knives with a blade length of more than 6 cm,
  • Scissors with a blade length over 6 cm measured from the hinge,
  • Martial arts equipment with a point or sharp edge,
  • Swords and sabers;

d) Tools - Tools that could cause serious injury or the safety of the aircraft, including:

  • Crowbar,
  • Drills and drills, including cordless portable drills,
  • Tools with a blade or shaft longer than 6 cm that can be used as a weapon, such as screwdrivers and chisels,
  • Saws, including portable cordless saws,
  • Blowtorches,
  • Nail guns and pneumatic nailers;

e) blunt objects - Objects that, when used as a striking weapon, can cause serious injury, including

  • Baseball and softball bats,
  • Clubs and batons, like killers,
  • Martial arts equipment;

f) Explosives and incendiary substances as well as explosives and incendiary devices - Explosives, incendiary materials, explosives and incendiary devices that are capable or appear to be capable of causing serious injury or endangering the safety of the aircraft, including:

  • Ammunition,
  • Detonators,
  • Detonators and detonators,
  • Replicas or imitations of explosive devices,
  • Mines, grenades or other military explosive devices,
  • Fireworks and other pyrotechnic products,
  • Smoke canisters and smoke cartridges,
  • Dynamite, gunpowder, and plastic explosives.

The following items are prohibited in checked baggage (Appendix 5-B):

The following items are not allowed to be carried in checked baggage by passengers:
Explosives and incendiary materials as well as explosives and incendiary devices - Explosives, incendiary materials, explosives and incendiary devices capable of causing serious injury or endangering the safety of the aircraft, including:

  • Ammunition,
  • Detonators,
  • Detonators and detonators,
  • Mines, grenades or other military explosive devices,
  • Fireworks and other pyrotechnic products,
  • Smoke canisters and smoke cartridges,
  • Dynamite, gunpowder, and plastic explosives.

The list of prohibited items is based on Commission Regulation (EU) No. 185/2010 of March 4, 2010 laying down detailed measures for the implementation of the common basic standards in aviation security in conjunction with Regulation (EU) No. 297/2010 of the Commission amending Regulation (EC) No. 272/2009 to supplement the common basic standards for the safety of civil aviation and national derogations.
