Tan properly: 10 tricks to stay tan longer
Why do we actually find a natural tan attractive? Evolutionary biologist Bernhard Fink explains in a current Nivea study that tanning makes our complexions appear more even and makes us look younger. Not only do we look healthier and fresher, but also small 'blemishes' such as age spots are concealed.
But be careful: if the tan deviates very much from the natural skin tone, it quickly looks artificial. To get a healthy, long-lasting tan, you need to tan properly. Here are the best tips and tricks to stay tan for as long as possible.

1. Tip: Pre-tanning is the be-all and end-all
If you want to get a real tan, you should first get your skin used to the sun. Starts with short stays in the sun and applies a high sun protection factor. Many women have their skin 'pre-tanned' in the solarium, but that does not protect the skin from the dangerous rays of the sun.
The rays in the solarium are mostly UVA rays, which hardly create the necessary protective cornea. The so-called 'light calluses', which protect our skin from sunburn and skin damage, only develop through 'real' sun rays.

Tip 2: Sunscreen is a must to stay tan longer
The most important rule when tanning is: Only expose yourself to the sun with a sun protection factor! How high the sun protection factor of your cream needs to be depends on how long you want to stay in the sun. This can be calculated very easily:
Self-protection time of the skin x sun protection factor = the maximum time you can stay in the sun
To find out what skin type you are, you should take a look at ours Phototype table throw:
It is a widespread misconception that a high sun protection factor prevents tanning. It's also a myth that you don't have to put on lotion in the shade! You can find even more sun protection myths here.
Our tip: Better to tan carefully, healthily and properly, rather than risking sunburn or something worse.

3rd tip: sun protection factor: more is more
When it comes to the sun protection factor, it is better to plop down instead of mess! You need around 30 to 40 ml, depending on your body size, for complete protection from head to toe. It's hard to believe: a normal 200 ml bottle of sunscreen is enough for a maximum of five to six days.
4th tip: To tan properly means to apply lotion more often
If you want to tan properly, the following rule of thumb applies: Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before sunbathing! In the course of the day you should also re-apply it regularly, because sweating and swimming can reduce the effectiveness of the sun protection.

Tip 5: Protect the skin from the inside
Antioxidants help to strengthen the skin's natural protective layer. So protect your skin not only from the outside, but also from the inside by relying on the right foods!
The following foods are particularly high in antioxidants:
- Citrus fruits,
Tip 6: exfoliate before sunbathing
Rid your body of dead skin by pampering yourself with a gentle peeling. With such a treatment, a few days before sunbathing, you will achieve an even tan. In addition, the skin is freed from oil and impurities, so that you can better absorb sun products.
You can find a summery scented peeling here on Amazon, for example. *
