Which Avengers will survive the Avenger Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War directors on what happened to Thanos after that snapshot

Is [SPOILER] trapped in the Soul Stone?

Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War follow below.

The climax of Avengers: Infinity War doesn't work as the fans originally thought. Traditional blockbuster storytelling would dictate that the heroes win and the villain be defeated. But what if the villain is the main character in your movie? What if the antagonist is the one on the hero's journey? Here are the directors Joe and Anthony Russo decided to take Infinity war which culminates in Thanos winning all six Infinity Stones, snapping his fingers and wiping out half the population of the entire universe.

When Thanos actually snaps his fingers, the film cuts into this dreamy world where Thanos confronts the younger version of his daughter Gamora - whom he sacrificed (i.e. murdered) in order to obtain one of the Infinity Stones and his plan to implement. Talking about Josh Horowitz Happy Sadly Confused On the podcast, Joe Russo stated that this sequence actually takes place in the Soul Stone and reflects the tragic ending of Thanos' hero's journey:

'It's [in the soul stone] it's an orange world they're in. Because he's on the hero's journey in the film, we pointed out that there is a correlating journey between Thor and Thanos in the film. Certain characters make very human decisions in the film that are very tragic and change the direction of the narrative. Quill makes that choice at Titan when he slaps Thanos in the face. Thor makes that choice when he thrusts the ax into Thanos' chest because he wants to tell him that he has it, that this is a repayment. If he hadn't made that decision, he would have gone for the kill if they weren't in this situation. For Thanos at the end of the film, this is part of his hero's journey. We put him in front of the only thing he cares about again, where he has to let himself into the emotional cost of what he did in the movie. '

So if you see Gamora in the soul stone, it means that she could be resuscitated Avenger 4 ? Joe Russo confirmed that what we see in the stone is indeed Gamora's ghost, while at the same time cleverly switching the topic of conversation to the damage Thanos Snap had done to Thanos himself:

'I think it's a reflection of [Gamora's] mind, and the power it takes to use all of the stones at once is so significant that Thanos is put into this dream state. You will find that his arm is damaged after it clicks into place, the glove is damaged after it clicks into place, it is the incredible energy it takes to do this, and it is only because of his strength that he will be able to actually survive when he does Glove used in this capacity. But it creates that cathartic moment for him. "

Many have assumed that the Thanos Snap didn't kill half the population of the universe, but trapped them all in the soul stone, which is what that would mean Avengers 4 would find the heroes trying to venture into the stone to get them out. But it also sounds like Thanos isn't his formidable self - the Snap may have placed a heavy physical strain on him, so it's possible that he can be more easily dropped when the OG Avengers finally catches up with him. We'll find out when in a year Avengers 4 comes to the cinemas.
