El Chapo uses drugs

US authorities at a loss | Where did drug lord El Chapo hide his money?

According to the business magazine Forbes, Joaquin "El Chapo" ("the short one") Guzmán (59) is one of the richest people in the world. His drug cartel is said to have a turnover of around three billion US dollars annually. And the 1.68 meter tall Mexican is said to make a lot of money with his people through human trafficking, extortion and protection money.

His fortune is estimated at $ 14 billion - but the US authorities have no idea where the detainee is hiding his money.

"To date, the US authorities have not even found a dollar of El Chapo's fortune," said Mexican Senator Raul Cervantes (53) now in a morning talk show on "Televisa".

"His money wasn't found because he didn't use the financial system."

"El-Chapo" was active in the cocaine milieu for 30 years: he was considered an extremely unscrupulous drug lord. If smugglers were late, for example, he is said to have shot them in the head in his early years in the 1980s.

In addition to crystal meth, marijuana and heroin, he is said to have smuggled around 450 tons of cocaine into the United States. Until his arrest in January 2016, he was the most powerful dealer in the world according to American drug investigators.

US Senator wants to build wall with drug money

The republican Rafael Edward "Ted" Cruz (46) now proposed that the fortune of "El Chapos" be used to finance the wall to Mexico.

Accordingly, around three quarters of the estimated construction costs could be covered with the assets of the cartel boss. According to his own statement, Cruz wants to curb the illegal importation of drugs from and via Mexico into the USA and considers it “an appropriate use of confiscated drug money”.

But to do this, the authorities would have to find the coal first ...

The drug lord who whines in jail

For years, "El Chapo" was the big boss of the Mexican Sinaloa cartel, mainly dealing in cocaine.

In 1993 Guzmán was arrested for the first time and sentenced to 20 years in prison. He had his first breakout after eight years.

In 2014, after three years at liberty, the cops managed to arrest him again.

But it didn't take long before he managed another spectacular escape ...

"El Chapo" escaped from the high-security Altiplano prison near Mexico City in July 2015 through a 1.5-kilometer tunnel.

A large contingent of police was looking for him, the Mexican attorney general offered a bounty of around 3.4 million euros.

In January 2016 - after almost six months on the run - elite soldiers captured the drug baron a third time in Mexico.

The US demanded his extradition to bring him to justice for, among other things, murder, kidnapping, drug smuggling and money laundering. This was done in mid-January 2017.

Since then, "El Chapo" has been sitting in a maximum security prison in New York and complains, among other things, that he cannot have sex there with his wife, the former beauty queen Emma Coronel (27).

According to his wife, Guzmán has to sit alone in his freezing cell 24 hours a day. If he, who has declared himself “not guilty”, is convicted, he faces life in prison.
