MOST FREQUENTLY CITED INTERNATIONAL

The list of “highly cited researchers” for 2019 has been finalized. 28 of the most frequently cited scientists worldwide are employees or members of the academy.

Your studies are read the most: the scientific work of the “highly cited researchers”. The world's most cited researchers also include 28 scientists who research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) or who are closely associated with it as members at home and abroad. This emerges from the current report by the US company Clarivate Analytics.

It records how often publications by a researcher from the respective subject area - including natural science, medicine, and economics and social sciences - were cited by colleagues in their publications. In addition to the number of publications in specialist journals, the citation frequency is a common comparison value for the scientific relevance of research work. In order to honor the work of researchers who have a strong influence on several scientific areas, there has also been a "Cross-Field" section for interdisciplinary work since 2018.

The ranking of the most productive and most cited scientists is based on the citation database "Web of Science" and currently includes around 6,000 scientists from 22 research areas worldwide. A total of 44 people from Austria are among the most internationally cited researchers. Sixteen of them are members of the OeAW, six scientists conduct research at OeAW institutes.

For the academy, this figure is particularly gratifying and further evidence of the success of a strategy of excellence that has been consistently pursued for a long time. Because: Although only two percent of all scientists working in Austria are employed at the ÖAW, their share of “highly cited researchers” is an above-average thirteen percent.
