What is a Mangalam in Carnatic Music

With “Sambho Mahadeva” - “Oh, great God Sambhu”, WERGO is continuing the MUSEUM COLLECTION BERLIN series, which is dedicated to the Berlin Phonogram Archive, one of the most important collections of traditional music.
The recordings on this double CD demonstrate an unadulterated traditional style of carnatic music, as represented by the "vina" players Rajeswari Padmanabhan and Karaikudi Sambasivayer Subramanian. In addition, this edition sees itself as an introduction to carnatic instrumental music, especially the essence and playing technique of the "vina".
The "vina" is one of the most important instruments of carnatic music, which is still very much alive today and forms an essential part of cultural life in South India. Rajeswari Padmanabhan and Karaikudi Sambasivayer Subramanian play the "vina" in the ninth generation. You will be accompanied by the excellent drummer Tanjore Upendran on the "mrdangam".
The recordings for "Sambho Mahadeva" were made in 1975 on the occasion of a guest performance by the three musicians in Berlin. Initially released on LP, the edition for WERGO was expanded to include seven first recordings.
The extensive text booklet contains detailed descriptions of the pieces of music and their respective styles, numerous music samples and photos.
