Melamine resin coatings have a number of crucial properties that make them ideal surfaces in the home. They form extremely hard and scratch-resistant surfaces, are liquid-repellent and do not conduct electricity. They are therefore valued as coatings on kitchen worktops as well as on furniture fronts and as flooring in the form of laminate.

The melamine resin coating takes on any decor of the composite with which the resin is pressed together. The topmost of the paper layers, which is chosen for the coatings, serves as a decoration. All motifs that can be applied to paper by means of printing or coloring are possible here.

Two production methods and forms of processing

Two processes are used in the manufacture of melamine resin coatings. So-called HPL products are laminates that are quickly pressed under very high pressure. Coatings with the designation CPL are pressed in longer, more permanent pressing methods and in layers. HPL can only be processed in sheet form, while CPL coatings are available both in sheet form and as rolls.

From a material thickness of two millimeters, a melamine resin coating is self-supporting and can be designed on both sides. Their properties also enable them to be used outdoors. The only limitation with melamine resin coatings is the temperature involved. From around seventy degrees Celsius, the toxic ingredients melamine and formaldehyde escape from the panels. Therefore, hot pans and saucepans should not be placed on the worktop. In the case of external cladding, the ventilation removes the fumes.

Alternative composites and maintenance properties

In addition to the melamine resin coatings, the resin can also be combined with more stable carrier materials than paper. Glass fiber and textile fabric are typical examples that give coatings expanded design options and stability properties.

Despite its hard surface, a melamine resin coating is not scratch-resistant to the effects of fine grinding and cuts. Therefore, no abrasive cleaning agents or microfiber products should be used for maintenance. Cutting directly on the surface leads to cutting grooves.

Other synthetic resins and use of adhesive properties

The properties of a melamine resin coating are influenced by different composites and aggregates. In the case of laminate floors, it is primarily the abrasion resistance that is additionally increased. In order to achieve the required and desired properties, others are also used in conjunction. Typical companions are phenolic resins, polyurethanes and wood glue (€ 4.49 on Amazon *) fabrics.

The adhesive effect of melamine resin extends its usefulness to the creation of connections or the permanent assembly of self-supporting cladding elements. They are often used as retrofitted kitchen fronts, for example to cover a dishwasher. Some kitchen renovation systems offer the permanent and firmly connected gluing of melamine resin panels as a type of cladding as an alternative to direct coating.

If you maintain a melamine resin coating, you do not use any cleaning agents that form a protective film. These include polishes, furniture waxes and decalcifying agents.
