Famous athletes apart from football

In athletics, Portugal was able to win several medals at European and World Championships as well as the Olympic Games. Carlos Lopes, a former long-distance runner, became his country's first Olympic champion in 1984. Nelson Évora won the gold medal in the triple jump at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Rosa Mota (gold in marathon 1988) and Fernanda Ribeira (gold over 10,000 meters in 1996) are Portuguese Olympic champions. So far, athletes from Portugal have won 24 Olympic medals (4 × gold, 8 × silver and 12 × bronze).

Portugal has not yet won any medals at the Winter Olympics.

Sports competitions in Portugal

Numerous internationally known competitions, tournaments and events in various sports take place every year.

In winter, the best national teams in women's football meet for the Algarve Cup. Motorsport fans know the Rally de Portugal and the Superbike World Championship. The Volta a Portugal is an annual cycling race.

Important running competitions are the Lisbon Half Marathon in March, the Madeira Island Ultra Trail in April, the Lisbon Triathlon in May and the Porto Marathon in November.

The most important tournaments for golfers in Portugal are the Open de Portugal in May and the Portugal Masters in September.
