Time change daylight saving time 2022: When is it in Germany in March? Clock change forwards or backwards?

The time change to daylight saving time will still exist in 2022 - an abolition is not in sight. How does the clock change in March? Are the hands moved forward or backward? And does the cell phone switch over automatically? All important information is available here.

When will the time change to daylight saving time in March 2022 in Germany?

The date for the changeover to summer time 2022 in Germany is Sunday, March 27th. On this date, at 2 a.m., the clocks are put forward by one hour to 3 a.m. The result: an hour of sleep is stolen from us and we have to get up earlier.

However, the time change in spring also has an advantage: After work, it stays light for an hour longer, so you actually have a little more of the day.

Time change to summer time 2022: set the clock forwards or backwards?

Change the clock: what was that like? When the clock is set forward and backward, many can not remember. So here are the details again. When are the clocks changed?

  • In March the clock is put forward one hour. So 1:59 a.m. follows 3:00 a.m.
  • The clock is put back one hour in October. 2.59 a.m. is followed by 2.00 a.m.

Clock change: What about the abolition of the time change?

Actually, the change from winter time to summer time and back should be abolished. At the beginning of July 2018, EU citizens were allowed to say what they think of the time change in an online vote - and a large majority of 84 percent voted in favor of its abolition.

The EU Commission actually planned the abolition for 2021. But that failed because the states could not agree on whether summer or winter time should apply permanently. The corona crisis has pushed the issue further into the background, so that abolition is not in sight.

Change the clock: Since when and why has there been a time change in Germany?

Change the clock when and why? During the First and Second World Wars, there was already a change from winter to summer time in Germany, but this did not follow a clear pattern. The renewed - and permanent - changeover between summer and winter time was decided in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1978, but did not come into force until 1980. One reason was the desire to adapt to the neighboring countries to the west, which had already introduced summer time in 1977 for reasons of energy policy. Another reason was the fact that the FRG and the GDR had to agree on the introduction of summer time so that Germany and especially Berlin were not divided in time.

In 1996, the clock changeover was standardized across the EU, since then people in all EU countries have set the clocks one hour forward on the last Sunday in March and back one hour on the last Sunday in October. And why is it all? Actually, the daylight should be used more effectively through the time change and thus energy should be saved. However, the actual benefit is controversial.

Does the mobile phone automatically switch to daylight saving time?

The signal for the time change is sent by the atomic clock of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig. Radio controlled clocks, computers adjust automatically. With some smartphones, however, the function could be deactivated under certain circumstances and must first be reactivated via the settings. (sge)
