The story of CET

Since 1976, the Center for Eco-Technology has helped lead the way towards a more sustainable society through innovative pilot programs and production-scale services. With our partners in community, government, and business, our combined efforts have changed the way we live and work for a better community, business, and environment. Here you will find a selection of our joint work over the years:

1970s: Raising awareness of the environment through the First Earth Day, national environmental laws (Clean Air and Water Laws, National Energy Law) and the establishment of an EPA; Decade of oil crises and 脰 lembargo.

1976 - Establishment of CET

1976 - CET was founded in Pittsfield, Massachusetts:

CET is one of the few environmental organizations of its kind in the whole of the country, founded in the 1970s and still existing in a similar form today

The Small Business Energy Program provided some of the earliest energy assessments for businesses to identify ways to increase their energy efficiency.

Energy Circuit Rider provided grant writing services to local authorities to apply for funding for energy conservation installation.

Berkshire training and employment program

BTEP - Berkshire Training and Employment Program - carried out
Weather training for unemployed young people.

Energy finance programs

Energy finance programs for efficiency and renewable energies:

Solar Bank - managed 0% loan program that wrote off the principal and provided interest-free financing for residents to install solar hot water systems

Thermal Loan Program - Helped manage one of the earliest funding programs to help residents install solar and energy efficiency improvements

Over the decades, the HEAT Loan and Solar Loan programs and similar programs have helped millions of people across the country

Springfield material recycling facility

Expanded Waste Management and Recycling Services, including working with cities to adopt mandatory recycling statutes so they can join the local Springfield Materials Recycling Facility (MRF):

The Springfield MRF remains the only public and private one

Public television

Conducting a public education on the pros and cons of recycling at community meetings on public television.

Conservation Law Foundation

Partnered with the Conservation Law Foundation and other energy and environmental groups to bring lawsuits against utility companies

Participation in the network of regional program operators to deliver energy programs to communities in western Massachusetts:

These initial and similar efforts helped pave the way for today's Nationwide Green Communities program and the development of volunteer boards and staff for sustainability in many cities

Establishment of the CET Heating Oil Cooperative to offer fair prices and high quality service as well as information on energy efficiency and energy quality

Run a non-profit energy efficiency program that provided energy assessments and helped non-profit organizations apply for funding to install measures.

Expanded environmental education program, including interactive video conferencing, the first Berkshire Junior Solar Sprint, the REAPS school recycling program, and the Earth Stewards After School program.

Help remove previous barriers to adoption of PV in multi-installation non-profit organizations and municipalities and collaborate on some of the early third-party ownership models

Convening of the Berkshire Renewable Energy Collaborative

Providing information workshops and public forums, recruiting and promoting participants for the annual Green House Open House tour

Coordinated and conducted wind energy tours

In collaboration with the Green Energy Consumers Alliance, 1,500 households in New England GreenStart were registered for renewable electricity

Helped cities earn over $ 500,000 in funding and grants to implement local clean energy projects. These efforts have also helped fund some of the first sustainability worker positions in local government

Farm services
