What is a modern Pharisaeer

Pharisees in focus of the Pontifical Bible Institute

The Pontifical Bible Institute is celebrating its 110th anniversary with an international conference from May 7th to 9th, which will focus on the relationship between Jesus and the Pharisees. According to the rector of the Bible Institute, Michael Kolarcik SJ, this relationship can describe the relationship between Christians and Jews over the past two millennia. What we said about it “and how we say it” has “consequences for the current relationship between Christians and Jews”. He therefore hoped that the conference would deepen the dialogue between Jews and Christians and promote the “common and frank search for the truth”.

Scientists from all over the world

The conference "Jesus and the Pharisees: An Interdisciplinary Reassessment" is organized in collaboration with the "Cardinal Bea Center for Judaic Studies" at the Gregorian University and supported by the American Jewish Committee and the Italian Bishops' Conference (CEI), among others . Scientists from Austria, Germany, Italy, Israel, Argentina, Canada, Colombia, India, the Netherlands and the United States will take part.

From the origins to today's interpretations

As the German biblical scholar Joseph Sievers said at the press conference, the conference primarily aims to investigate the origin and meaning of the term “Pharisee” in various languages. In a second part, the conference will deal with the interpretation of the Pharisees from the Church Fathers' literature to the Passion Play to the representations in films and in current textbooks for religious instruction. Finally, new models are to be presented in order to present the Pharisees “less inappropriately” in the future.
