In Germany, 605,000 business founders started their own business in 2019. Start-ups and business start-ups in the commercial sector, in trade, in the skilled trades, right through to business start-ups in the liberal professions, are of great importance for the economy: They not only create new jobs, but also promote competitiveness and innovation, and keep them socially responsible Fit for the market economy.

Since business founders are also affected by the consequences of the current corona pandemic, the federal government has taken a number of measures to support companies - quickly and unbureaucratically. Start-ups generally have access to all support measures of the Corona aid package. However, traditional credit instruments often do not fit the needs of start-ups, young technology companies and small and medium-sized companies. In many cases, they do not meet the requirements placed on borrowers by house banks due to their young age and mostly very innovative business model. That is why we offer a tailor-made support package. We are taking an additional 2 billion euros into our hands and expanding venture capital financing so that financing rounds for promising innovative start-ups from Germany can continue to take place.

Creating innovations and jobs

Founders realize innovative ideas and thus promote progress, growth and competitiveness. Around 15 percent of business start-ups launched a new product on the regional, German or global market in 2019. More than every fourth start-up is “digital”, which means that digitization or the use of digital technologies is decisive for the implementation of the business concept.

Starting a self-employed business has positive employment effects. Start-ups relieve the labor market and create jobs. In 2019, new start-ups created 454,000 new full-time jobs.

Promote competition and structural change

The number of players in the competitive scene is growing through the establishment of new companies. Young companies not only challenge existing companies with new products, services, processes and business models, they also drive competition. In the digital world, innovative start-ups are increasingly becoming the driving force behind change.

Strengthening freedom, diversity and stability in society

Independent companies contribute to the stability of our democratic social order. Economic responsibility is spread over many shoulders, "concentration of power" is prevented and entrepreneurial freedom is promoted. The start-up scene is heterogeneous and diverse.

Targeted promotion of the proportion of women among business start-ups

Only about every third business start-up is done by a woman; on the other hand, according to the microcensus, the proportion of women among all employed persons between the ages of 15 and 64 is 46.9 percent. Positive developments can be observed in part-time start-ups: in 2019, the proportion of women was 41 percent. Overall, and especially in the case of innovative start-ups, the start-up potential of women must be exploited through targeted measures.

Start-up offensive

In order to strengthen the start-up culture in Germany, Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier started the start-up offensive “GO!” Together with business in November 2018, with the aim of providing additional impetus, encouraging start-ups and anchoring start-ups even more firmly in society. Entrepreneurial thinking and relevant skills should therefore be taught as early as possible in schools and universities. In addition, the digital advisory services for start-ups are to be expanded, company successions are to be made easier and more women are to be won over to entrepreneurship. Tailor-made financing instruments should continue to be available for founders and sufficient venture capital for start-ups.
