Android 8.1 Oreo is being rolled out

Starting today (December 5th, 2017), Google will provide the slightly larger Android 8.1 Oreo update for the first devices. The first devices to get the update are Pixel and Nexus devices:

  • Pixel 1

  • Pixel 2

  • Pixel C

  • Nexus 5X

  • Nexus 6P

All other Android users will have to wait until 2018. The update, which, in addition to many detailed improvements, will also correctly display the notorious burger emoji in the future, will be rolled out during the course of the day.

At the same time, Google is also making Android Go available. Android Go is a version of Android specially designed for low-performance devices.

Android 8.0 Oreo has officially launched

Google's new Android 8.0 system is finally ready after a year of development and months of testing! The Android version was unveiled yesterday evening at 8 p.m. (German time) - at the same time as the great solar eclipse over North America, which Intel is also using as an opportunity to present the new 8th generation core processors (Coffee Lake).

Now the official name of Android O is no longer a secret, which has been the subject of much speculation. And as most suspected, the "O" actually stands for "Oreo". Incidentally, Google traditionally names its Android versions after a dessert.

Who is Android 8.0 Oreo already available for?

From now on everyone has access to the system via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which is especially interesting for developers. In the next few weeks, Google will roll out Android 8.0 Oreo on its own devices Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.

Users who have already installed Android 8.0 in advance in the beta program on their supported smartphones such as Google Pixel / Pixel XL, Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X will already receive the final version as an over-the-air update. Which we can confirm, because we were able to download and install the final version on our Pixel today. The image files are also available for downloading for manual flashing - you can read how this works at the end of this article.

In addition, Google is working closely with many smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC, Sony and Motorola, who will update their current phones to the latest Android version by the end of the year.

Revised settings

EnlargeGoogle has completely revised the settings of Android 8 and significantly reduced the menu entries.

The Google developers have consistently revised the settings and not only given them a new icon, but also significantly reduced the number of entries. Instead, the Android 7 menu, which you could display by swiping from the left, has also disappeared. Instead, all network connections are now grouped under the heading "Network and Internet", regardless of whether they are via WLAN or cellular radio. The coupling with other devices can be found in Android O under "Connected devices".

Due to the adjustments, a total of 13 menu items are now available in the settings. Once you have got used to the new menu structure, this will certainly help to improve the clarity.

Optimized file manager

EnlargeThe file manager of Android 8 has been revised and now offers you rudimentary functions for copying, moving and creating structures.

The file manager now offers the basic interactions necessary to delete, copy or move files. You can even create new folders and move files there - provided you have the appropriate permissions. In any case, the revised file manager, which you call up via the download symbol, cannot hold a candle to an app like the "ES File Explorer". For most users, however, no additional app is required thanks to the extended range of functions.
