Which supplements help with depression
Online program is supposed to help against depression
Everyone knows bad phases. Everything is not really fun anymore, the days are gray and gray, there is simply a lack of energy. Some then say: “I have a depressive phase.” But anyone who is familiar with depression knows that such moods have nothing to do with it.
Professional help required for depression
Permanently depressed mood, loss of interest, difficulty concentrating. Self-esteem or physical symptoms are classic signs of depression. For a reliable diagnosis, however, those affected should consult their family doctor, a specialist in psychiatry / psychotherapy / neurology or a psychologist.
Experts say that anyone who has real depression needs professional help to get out of it. The German Foundation for Depression Aid offers a self-test that can at least provide initial indications of a depression to be treated.
Computer program is not a replacement for therapy
Support in coping with the disease has recently also come in the form of computer programs. One of them is called "iFight Depression" - translated it means: I fight the depression.
In an accompanying study it was shown: The program can actually help those affected, but it is not suitable as a therapy substitute. "IFight Depression" was developed by the German Depression Aid Foundation, which has its headquarters in Leipzig. The program is explained here:
Learning to cope with everyday life again
iFight Depression is intended to support those affected in finding their way back to normal everyday life. Even small tasks or activities, such as clearing out a washing machine or meeting friends that you couldn't do during the depression, are entered in a kind of diary. This makes it possible to recognize even small successes and advances and to grow with them.
Entering into the online diary gives those affected security and helps to unravel their feelings. But what does such a program have to offer to make it happen?
Diary of successes and failures in everyday life
The psychologist Caroline Oehler examines online interventions for people with depression, including the website of iFight Depression. Several tabs appear next to one another on the start page. It says, in red text on a white background, e.g. "Thinking, feeling, acting", "Sleep and depression", "Planning and doing beautiful things", "Doing things", "Recognizing negative thoughts". And behind these slogans there are different tasks. Caroline Oehler calls it "workshops".
"Think, feel, act" is an introduction to one of the basic principles of cognitive behavioral therapy:
- How can I naturally influence my thoughts?
- What do i feel after?
- In turn, how do my feelings influence my actions and vice versa?
Depression often goes undetected and therefore goes untreated
The program itself draws attention to your own well-being, because everything happens in the head when you are suffering from depression. There is no visible damage, says Prof. Ulrich Hegerl, Chairman of the Board of the German Depression Aid Foundation. At most a sad face testifies to it, or that the self-confident, upright walk has been lost. The psychiatrist has been providing information on depression for years, with moderate success.
Studies prove effectiveness
For 30 years, the psychiatrist Ulrich Hegerl has been committed to better research and treatment of the disease. According to Hegerl, studies show that programs accompanied by a doctor work much better than unaccompanied. Therefore may iFight Depression can only be issued by doctors. And these people definitely need medical help.
Suicides as a result of untreated depression
Coming out of the depression is very difficult and some never make it. Ulrich Hegerl sees the cause of the well over 9,000 suicides each year in Germany primarily in untreated depression.
The online program iFight Depression should control against it. It is now used by several thousand patients in Germany and has been translated into 10 languages, most recently into Arabic. Doctors also pass it on to patients during inpatient therapy.
The neurologist Maria Strauss used the online program iFight Depression had good experiences at the Leipzig University Hospital. Whether patients actually use it has a lot to do with age.
Older people are skeptical, while younger people even ask about it. In the meantime, Maria Strauss has made the experience that older patients who have a smartphone use it and say that it is a good repetition of things that have been done during therapy, e.g. in a group.
Online program for bridging the gap while waiting for therapy
But don't doctors make it too easy for themselves with a self-help program? Patients could feel deported. The psychologist Caroline Oehler has thought about this many times, but sees more advantages than disadvantages. With it, users could do a lot for themselves at home.
And for a transitional period until a therapy place becomes available, be it always good. In the past few months she has been evaluating a study that confirms this. 347 subjects took part. Half of them worked with us iFight Depressionwho have favourited other with an online relaxation program.
Clinic and doctors for home
The test subjects worked with it for six weeks. The researchers found that over the six weeks the symptoms of depression regressed and did so iFight Depression the quality of life, compared to the control group, increased significantly more.
Psychologists confirm that the program is mainly suitable for patients with mild to moderate depression. But it can also be used in more severe cases iFight Depression Help those affected, for example immediately after a stay in hospital:
