Oxygen in the blood

Doctors also refer to the oxygen content in the blood as oxygen saturation, or SO for short2. It indicates how much of the red blood pigment, also called hemoglobin, has oxygen. The substance is of great importance in the organism because it influences numerous metabolic processes.

The amount of oxygen in the blood depends on several factors. These include, for example, the pH value, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the body fluid and the temperature.

In some cases, patients have increased levels of oxygen. This happens, for example, when breathing quickly and deeply. Low oxygen saturation results from decreased breathing or shortness of breath. Unsportsmanlike people tend to “gasp”, especially after physical exertion.

What does blood oxygen represent?

The oxygen content in the blood originally comes from the air we breathe. The body absorbs it through the lungs. Then it gets into the blood, where the erythrocytes bind it to the red blood pigment.

This shows that a larger amount of oxygen in the blood leads to a lighter color. Accordingly, the oxygen content also has an effect on the attractiveness of the patient. Inside the blood, the gaseous oxygen exerts pressure, which is oxygen partial pressure, or pO for short2, is called. This influences how much oxygen binds to the red pigment in the blood. The higher the oxygen partial pressure, the more oxygen is attached to the hemoglobin. In some cases, medical professionals determine blood oxygen levels and saturation levels.

The factors are relevant in the following situations:

  • The patients suffer from a lung disease such as pulmonary embolism;
  • a severe circulatory disorder develops into shock;
  • a metabolic disorder occurs;
  • those affected develop kidney weakness;
  • a high acid-base loss occurs due to diarrhea or vomiting.

In order to find out the oxygen level in the blood, the doctor takes a blood sample from the patient. The measurement is made in the capillary blood or in the body fluid that comes from the arteries.

The medical professionals receive the capillary blood as soon as they prick the fingertip or the earlobe of the consumer. Usually, the method proves to be less complicated, as puncturing the artery is considered a painful process. The oxygen in the blood is subject to special norm limits. Here too, oxygen saturation plays an important role. It is 90 to 96 percent in healthy people.

The oxygen partial pressure is on average 65 to 100 Torr. If the oxygen content in the blood is low, this results from a lung disease. This means that less oxygen reaches the red blood pigment via the lungs. Poisoning or a blood disease also has a negative effect on oxygen saturation. Other reasons for low blood oxygen levels are asthma and circulatory disorders. People with a low level of satiety also often suffer from a heart defect.

At the same time, there are natural causes that result in a low oxygen content. For example, the ambient air contains little oxygen. This is the case, for example, in high mountains. The pH value is also very important. If it is out of balance, the ability of the O to bind decreases2. This leads to a reduction in oxygen saturation.

High levels of oxygen in the blood

With deep breathing, the level of oxygen in the body fluid increases. In some cases there is an increase of up to 100 percent. This threatens a significant reduction in the carbon dioxide content in the blood.

Furthermore, the values ​​increase if the air you breathe contains too much oxygen. The concentration of the element also increases in patients taking part in oxygen therapy under positive pressure. Another name for the treatment is "hyperbaric oxygen therapy". In this case, however, the patients do not need to fear any illness.

To measure the oxygen in the blood, doctors do pulse oximetry. This happens, for example, as a preliminary examination for a surgical procedure. In addition, the measure is of great importance for people who suffer from a lung disease. If they do not get enough air, the typical characteristic is cyanosis.

This leads to a bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes. If the phenomenon occurs, there is already cell damage within the organism. It is therefore necessary to determine the oxygen content at an early stage.

In pulse oximetry, doctors make use of the changed coloration of the blood pigment. The saturated blood, in particular, which contains a lot of oxygen, appears bright red. Unsaturated blood, for example from the veins, contains less O2. This makes it look dark red to bluish. It primarily absorbs light from the infrared range. In contrast, the bright red blood mainly absorbs red light. For this reason, a light source is used in the method.

It emits light with a wavelength of 660 nanometers. The infrared light has a wavelength of 940 nanometers. The second part of the pulse oximeter is behind the part of the body where the doctors take the measurement. As a rule, they place the device on the earlobe or index finger. Now this measures how much light gets through the device. A computer uses the resulting value to determine the actual oxygen saturation of the blood.

The measurement method is given priority as soon as the patient is given mind-altering medication. In addition, the doctors check the oxygen level before anesthesia. The pulse oximeter is also used in people who suffer from pneumonia. This enables the doctors to recognize whether there is already a lack of oxygen. This means that it is quickly possible to initiate a countermeasure. Rescue services already have portable versions of the device to help those affected promptly.

With pulse oximetry, patients do not need to fear any side effects. The process is risk-free. Furthermore, it is possible to monitor the oxygen saturation continuously. Since this happens in real time, a drop in the value triggers an immediate alarm.

Recommended breathing exercises for the patient

The level of oxygen in the blood is extremely important for your health. If you are prone to lung problems, it is therefore a good idea to find out the oxygen saturation in the body fluid. If you are interested in adding value, consider a straightforward breathing exercise. In the best case scenario, you stand up straight and take a deep breath. You stop this for a few seconds and then eject it again. The patients repeat the process several times a day if necessary. Even several deep breaths are enough to bind more oxygen to the hemoglobin. Furthermore, your family doctor recommends, for example, oxygen therapy.
