Many vineyards are cultivated by winegrowers who were practically born with the craft. Family vintners as heirs to their parents' business seem to be the rule.

Even newcomers can make it step by step to their own vineyard and be quite successful with it. Many winegrowers who came from completely different professions and have successfully switched saddles are impressive proof of this.

 

Is winemaking a dream job?

Why not, wine is popular everywhere. More than 20 million hectoliters flow through the Germans' throats every year. Without this professional group, the glasses remained empty and the throats dry. Crushed grapes are always beautiful to look at. There is no doubt that winemaking is a profession with a future and which industry can claim this unreservedly. If you want to learn the trade, you should of course feel a little connected to the vines and not be afraid of working in the open air and in any weather. He or she has to take care of the grape harvest, they press the wine and ensure that the grape juice is properly bottled and, of course, marketed.

There are two ways to become a winemaker, namely through a classic apprenticeship or through a degree. The training lasts three years. High school graduates can shorten the training period to two years. The training usually takes the young people into the vineyard, whatever the weather. The budding winemakers will also be active in the wine cellar and monitor and control the production.

The training to become a winemaker explained

The trainees are trained in the training company and in the vocational school. The spectrum covers the entire route of the grape from its cultivation to its marketing. Training includes the necessary know-how to properly plant young plants or prune the vines properly. The trainees will harvest the grapes by hand, and machines will be used and their operation will be taught. If you don't enjoy physical work outdoors, you should perhaps take up another apprenticeship. A keen sense for tastes and smells is an advantage for training as a winemaker. A careful way of working is required, as is an interest in mathematics and biology. Wine doesn't do it alone. Future professionals can expect a wide range of activities with many different tasks until the grapes are bottled in convincing quality.

Around 850 trainees are taken on annually by the wine-growing companies in the German wine regions. The budding winemakers will find the best chance of a permanent job in the vineyard along the Rhine. In the three years of training, the trainees earn between 500 and 640 euros gross. After the apprenticeship, all areas of winemaking are open to the freshly baked winemakers. Viticulture, cellar management, sales and marketing are areas where there are good prospects for employment. A winemaker does not have to work alone in the winery, employment with winemaker cooperatives or trading companies is also conceivable. Winegrowers can expect a monthly basic remuneration of around 1,700 euros gross.

Career steps at the winemaker

Once the apprenticeship has been completed, winemakers can take up various training courses. It is therefore possible to train to become a master craftsman or a state-certified technician. Postgraduate studies are also an option. Various German technical colleges and universities have courses such as viticulture, viticulture and oenology in their portfolio. Ehthusiast, who want to go to school, can achieve the degrees of Bachelor, Master and graduate engineer.

In the Rhine-Main area, the range of corresponding courses of study is greatest. For example, the "Viticulture and Oenology" course is offered at the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences in Geisenheim. If you want to make it to the top in viticulture, you should think about further studies. A few years ago, master winemakers still had it easy to climb the career ladder. However, increasing demands have meant that in many places applicants without a university degree have almost no chance.

Two birds with one stone can be killed with the dual study program. A university degree is completed parallel to the winemaking apprenticeship. The course content is broadly based on marketing, business administration, biology, mathematics or chemistry. The course also includes tasting the wines. So you shouldn't be averse to the grape juice.

Vintner apprenticeship on the second educational path - retraining

Winemaking is not only an option as an entry into the professional world, you might want to get out of your stressful job and try your hand at becoming a winemaker. Nothing stands in the way, because retraining as a winemaker is definitely an educational path that is not infrequently chosen and for many aspirants has the realization of their own wishes and goals as its content.

The cultivation of wine is not necessarily connected with an apprenticeship as a winemaker, but if you want to get into the wine business successfully, you would do well to learn viticulture from the bottom up and be familiar with tips and tricks, the layman rarely dominate. Retraining to become a winemaker can not only take you to wineries. Further fields of activity have established themselves around viticulture. In this way, budding winemakers can later find themselves in wine offices or laboratories.

The profession of winemaker seems extremely attractive, because many celebrities have long gone among the winemakers and enjoy their own grapes. The dream job of a winemaker is therefore very popular. G√ľnther Jauch is celebrated as the wine king on the Saar, there is a whole celebrity vineyard in Mainz and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have already won prestigious awards as new winemakers.
As the ideal winemaker, you don't have to be particularly hard-drinking. However, dealing with food and beverages should be yours. Future winegrowers should be physically fit, because the work in the vineyards is often strenuous, especially when the vines are on a slope and the use of appropriate equipment is not possible.

The requirements for future winegrowers in a nutshell:

- well developed sense of taste and smell
- physically fit
- technical understanding
- interested in the production and processing of food
- reliable, independent and responsible

If you look for job vacancies as a winemaker, the market is quite manageable. Many winemakers work on their own wineries and rarely accept outside orders. It is an advantage to know the winemakers and to get into the businesses through the local network. Assignments abroad are also possible, which help broaden your horizon. Applications in the classic sense are rarely written among winemakers; people tend to trust good word-of-mouth propaganda.

 

Tomorrow's viticulture

The winemaker's profession is guaranteed not to die out. The number of trained winemakers has more than doubled in the last ten years. German wine is popular and there is also increasing demand internationally. If we look a little further into the future, then the winemakers will certainly benefit from climate change. If the thermometer rises, then there will soon be favorable wine conditions in northern Germany and the vineyard in Sylter Keitum will certainly face competition. So if you are looking for a promising and exciting job, you are on the right track.
