Historical half-timbered houses in the LVR open-air museum in Kommern

Event together with the Department of Architectural Theory, RWTH Aachen University, Prof. Axel Sowa, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Manfred Speidel

The LVR open-air museum in Kommern, approx. 40 km south of Düren, houses buildings and farms from the Eifel, Westerwald, Lower Rhine and Bergisches Land. In order to preserve the half-timbered buildings, defective compartments are rebuilt with clay in the traditional construction method: hazel branches are woven around oak sticks and then pelted with clay; finally the surfaces are compacted.

The practical handling of historical buildings and historical building methods is interesting for architects as well as for preservationists.

Architecture students can take part in the work under the guidance of the museum's carpenters and bricklayers.

The seminar takes place as an event in the field of architectural theory, but students from other faculties or universities as well as non-students are also welcome.
