Where is pharmacy studied?

Free University of Berlin

The Institute for Pharmacy is part of the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Pharmacy. The number of pharmacy students is around 570 (always based on WS 13/14 for comparability). The course starts in the summer and winter semesters, 65 and 68 places are available. The Institute of Pharmacy is spread over two locations: Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Biology are located near the Botanical Garden - which of course also has a medicinal plant garden. By the way, pharmacy students at the FU Berlin can enter the Botanical Garden free of charge with their student ID. Pharmaceutical Technology and Clinical Pharmacy / Biochemistry are about four kilometers away in Berlin-Steglitz. At the Berlin location, the collaboration with the Charité in research and teaching is highlighted.

University of Bonn

In Bonn, the Pharmacy Department - consisting of the Institute for Pharmaceutical Biology and the Pharmaceutical Institute - is assigned to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Pharmaceutical Institute is divided into the areas of Pharmaceutical Chemistry I and II, Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Drug Regulatory Affairs and Clinical Pharmacy. Pharmaceutical Microbiology is a department of the Institute for Microbiology and Biotechnology and belongs to both the Medical and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. With over 800 pharmacy students, Bonn is one of the largest university locations for pharmacy. The pharmacy course begins for 90 new students in both the summer and winter semesters. In Bonn, you can also take the master’s course in drug research. In cooperation with the German Society for Regulatory Affairs, the Master’s degree in Drug Regulatory Affairs is also offered.

Technical University of Braunschweig

Pharmacy has been represented at the TU Braunschweig (formerly Collegium Carolinum) since 1835. The number of pharmacy students is around 720. There are almost 80 new places available per semester. In the Faculty of Life Sciences, pharmacy is represented by four institutes and one department: In addition to the institutes for pharmacology, toxicology and clinical pharmacy, medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical biology and pharmaceutical technology, there is the department for the history of natural sciences with a focus on the history of pharmacy. After completing the postgraduate course in history of pharmacy, a doctorate can be obtained in this area. A medicinal plant garden was created directly at the Pharmacy Center, especially for pharmacy students. The TU Braunschweig also has a practice pharmacy including pharmacy software and literature, so that students can prepare for practical activities in the pharmacy. Starting this winter semester, the university is offering the interdisciplinary master’s degree in pharmaceutical engineering for pharmacists and engineers.

Heinrich-Heine-University Dusseldorf

Around 670 prospective pharmacists are studying in Düsseldorf. The university has around 70 places available for both the summer and winter semesters. In addition to the subjects of biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics and psychology, the subject of pharmacy is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Pharmacy consists of four institutes: Pharmaceutical Biology and Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical and Medical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, and Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacotherapy. As at many other universities, the field of pharmacology is not part of pharmacy. Teaching is covered by the medical faculty.

The University of Düsseldorf also has a training pharmacy for pharmacy students. A special feature, however, is that this is part of the technology. The teaching is therefore drug-related and deals, for example, with questions about the use of different drug forms, the divisibility of tablets or the times of intake from a galenic point of view.

Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg

The Friedrich Alexander University (FAU) is located in the Franconian town of Erlangen, near Nuremberg. The Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy belongs to the Faculty of Natural Sciences, which also includes the Department of Pharmacy and Food Chemistry with the chairs for Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology and Food Chemistry. A professorship for molecular and clinical pharmacy is attached to the chair for pharmaceutical technology. As part of clinical pharmacy, there is the so-called Teacher Practitioner Project: Students work on a patient case in the Psychiatric and Psychotherapeutic Clinic on in cooperation with the Teacher Practitioner - a pharmacist financed by the Lesmüller Foundation and with teaching and clinical-pharmaceutical experience University hospital Erlangen. The Faculty of Natural Sciences also includes the Department of Biology with a Chair for Pharmaceutical Biology. The teaching of pharmacology is provided by the Institute for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Medical Faculty. There are around 500 pharmacy students at the university. Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main

The university's Riedberg campus is located in the north of Frankfurt and is also home to the biochemistry, chemistry and pharmacy department. This accommodates almost 670 pharmacy students. Enrollment takes place in the summer (87 places) and winter semesters (85 places). In addition to the institutes for pharmaceutical biology, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmaceutical technology, the campus also houses the pharmacological institute for natural scientists, which organizes and carries out teaching in clinical pharmacy. Interdisciplinary courses are offered in cooperation with clinic doctors and pharmacists from hospitals, public pharmacies and the pharmaceutical industry. The association "Frankfurter Pharmazieschule" organizes the summer and winter school together with professors and assistants. The one-week course in Styria is offered to fourth-semester students as preparation for the first state examination. For students in the seventh semester there is the possibility to take part in the Pharmacon congresses in Meran or Davos (in future Schladming). In addition, the students also become active themselves: the final semester has been organizing a finished medicinal product seminar for a long time, for which the State Chamber of Pharmacists provides advanced training points. This summer, the medicinal plant garden was also opened as part of the science garden on the Riedberg.

Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg

The University of Freiburg is one of a total of three universities with a degree in Pharmacy in Baden-Württemberg. The Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences was created in 2003 from the Pharmaceutical Institute and the Institute for Pharmaceutical Biology and is part of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. In the winter semester, 90 first-year places are available for the state examination course. There are just under 460 pharmacy students in total.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences course has been offered since the winter semester 2009/2010 (Bachelor) and the summer semester 2013 (Master). The chairs for Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, and Pharmaceutical Biology and Biotechnology are currently located in different buildings. However, the aim is to accommodate all institutes at one location. Pharmacology is taught by the Institute for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, which is part of the Medical Faculty. Clinical pharmacy is taught in an interdisciplinary manner in Freiburg: pharmacy and pharmacology each take on half of the teaching. In addition to the compulsory courses, the University of Freiburg also offers seminars on various topics such as addiction and addiction prevention, expert-lay communication, evidence-based medicine and ethics.

Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald

The saying “study where others go on vacation” definitely applies to the pharmacy students from Greifswald. Because the 430 pharmacy students have the Baltic Sea right outside their door. In the summer and winter semesters, the Ernst Moritz Arndt University offers almost 70 pharmacy courses. The Institute of Pharmacy belongs to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and is divided into Pharmaceutical Biology, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Biopharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology, and Clinical Pharmacy. The teaching of pharmacology is carried out by the Department of Pharmacology, which is part of the university medicine. A new laboratory and internship building, which was completed in September, has just been moved into at the University of Greifswald.

Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg

The Institute for Pharmacy is located on the scientifically dominated Weinberg Campus of the Martin Luther University (MLU) and, in addition to biochemistry / biotechnology and biology, belongs to Faculty of Natural Sciences I. The institute areas of pharmacy consist of pharmaceutical biology and pharmacology, pharmaceutical technology and Biopharmacy as well as Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Clinical Pharmacy. Starting this semester, the institute's training pharmacy, which was inaugurated in the summer, can be used in teaching clinical pharmacy. The Protein Center is currently being built on campus and will be attached to Faculty I of Natural Sciences. In the future, students will be able to write their thesis here. With a good 170 places for the winter semester, Halle has the largest first semester in pharmacy nationwide. The total number of pharmacy students is 728.

University of Hamburg

Around 300 prospective pharmacists are studying in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, a little away from the main campus. Pharmacy belongs to the chemistry department - and thus to the faculty for mathematics, computer science and natural sciences. The Department of Pharmacy includes the departments of Pharmaceutical Biology and Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology, which cover the subjects of Pharmaceutical Biology, Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Clinical Pharmacy. The subject of pharmacology is taught by the Institute for Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The Institute of Pharmacy offers 59 places for each winter semester.

Heidelberg University

In addition to a pretty old town, the Neckar and the famous Heidelberg Castle - which houses the German Pharmacy Museum, among other things - you will also find the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg. At the Institute for Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology, which is part of the Faculty of Biosciences, 45 places will be allocated for the winter semester. With almost 200 pharmacy students, Heidelberg is the smallest pharmaceutical location. The institute's departments include pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical biology as well as pharmaceutical technology and biopharmacy. The teaching of pharmacology is provided by the Pharmacological Institute of the Medical Faculty. For clinical pharmacy there is a cooperation unit in which the Institute for Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology, the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacoepidemiology of the Medical University Hospital Heidelberg and the clinical pharmacy of the University Hospital Heidelberg are involved. As part of a special funding program called “Welcome to Science”, students in Heidelberg have the opportunity to take part in scientific lectures, learn how to deal with specialist information in German and English and work out therapy plans on their own based on specific cases.

Friedrich Schiller University Jena

In Jena, the Institute for Pharmacy is assigned to the Biological-Pharmaceutical Faculty. There are chairs in pharmaceutical biology, pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical technology and pharmaceutical microbiology. The teaching of pharmacology is the responsibility of the Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Jena University Hospital. The Institute of Pharmacy and the Institutes of the Medical Faculty are roughly equally responsible for teaching clinical pharmacy. In Jena, the pharmacy course starts in the winter semester for 83 first-year students. The number of pharmacy students is around 300. The university offers business seminars, for example from Noweda. There is also a professorship for industrial pharmacy.

Christian Albrechts University in Kiel

In the far north, almost 480 prospective pharmacists are studying at the Christian Albrechts University (CAU) in Kiel. The university offers around 60 places in both summer and winter semesters. The Pharmaceutical Institute with the departments of Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Biology, Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, and Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy is part of the Pharmacy Section of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Institute for Toxicology and Pharmacology for Natural Scientists and the Institute for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology of the Medical Faculty are responsible for teaching pharmacology. For the first time in the winter semester, the master's degree in drug research will be offered in Kiel. For those interested, a visit to the Medical and Pharmaceutical History Collection at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel is worthwhile.

University of Leipzig

At the University of Leipzig there will be 36 places available for pharmacy enthusiasts for the coming winter semester - the lowest number of places in a nationwide comparison. A total of 200 prospective pharmacists study at the Institute of Pharmacy, which is part of the Faculty of Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology. The institute has a chair for pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical biology, pharmacology for natural scientists, pharmaceutical technology and one for clinical pharmacy, some of which are not filled but are represented. The pharmacy in Leipzig has a practice pharmacy at its disposal, in which the students can practice counseling in a practical way. As part of the so-called Germany scholarships, the managing director of the institute, Prof. Michaela Schulz-Siegmund, has acquired twelve scholarships for the 2014/15 winter semester. The selected pharmacy students will receive financial support amounting to 300 euros per month for one year.

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

The number of pharmacy students at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is a good 530. The pharmacy course starts in the summer and winter semesters - around 45 places are available for each. The Institute for Pharmacy and Biochemistry - Therapeutic Life Sciences belongs to the Department of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Earth Sciences and is divided into Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, Pharmaceutical Biology, and Pharmacology and Toxicology. A professor is responsible for teaching clinical pharmacy, who is also the director of the pharmacy of the university medicine in Mainz. Like the universities in Braunschweig, Düsseldorf Halle and Leipzig, the pharmacy in Mainz has a training pharmacy - it is used in teaching clinical pharmacy. There are also numerous collaborations in the scientific field, not least because almost all institutes and also institutions such as the Max Planck Institutes for Chemistry and Polymer Research are in close proximity to one another.

Philipps University of Marburg

Pharmacy in Marburg is the only location with its own department - the history of which goes back a long way: in 1609 the world's first chair for chymiatrics was established in Marburg. With almost 1040 students, the Pharmacy Faculty is the largest pharmaceutical location in Germany. In a nationwide comparison, most study places are offered here within one year: 100 in the summer and 145 in the winter semester. The institutes of Pharmaceutical Biology and Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy and the Institute for the History of Pharmacy, founded in 1965, are located in the center of the old town. Only the Institute for Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy is located on the Lahnberge campus. The five fields of pharmacy are represented by 14 professors. In addition to their main studies, students can take the interdisciplinary master’s courses in Medicinal Chemistry or Molecular and Cellular Neurosciences. The latter starts for the first time this winter semester. In addition, a postgraduate course in pharmacy history is offered in Marburg with the possibility of a doctorate.

Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich

The Department of Pharmacy at the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich is part of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy.The department includes pharmaceutical biology, pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacology for natural sciences. The latter area is primarily responsible for teaching clinical pharmacy. Pharmaceutical chemistry, biology and technology are also involved. As part of clinical pharmacy, students can work with the hospital pharmacy of the university clinic to look after a patient case - together with doctors. 700 prospective pharmacists are studying at the LMU, which offers 100 and 88 places respectively for the winter and summer semesters. In addition, the university offers a bachelor's and master's degree in Pharmaceutical Science with a focus on modern pharmaceutical research.

Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster

With the “PharmaCampus”, which was inaugurated last year, the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität has united the three pharmaceutical institutes Pharmaceutical Biology and Phytochemistry, Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry as well as Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmaceuticals under one roof. The more than 700 students benefit not only from the physical proximity, but also from the new equipment in the lecture halls and laboratories. Enrollment takes place in the summer and winter semesters, 72 and 80 places are available. The teaching of pharmacology and clinical pharmacy is carried out by professors assigned to the Institute for Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry. The five sub-disciplines of pharmacy have launched the PharMSchool project for students in their main studies. The aim is to link the contents of the subjects more intensively with one another. In group projects, various aspects of pharmaceutical science are to be examined and brought together from the different perspectives of the individual sub-areas. In addition to the state examination, the university also offers a master’s degree in drug science.

University of Regensburg

The Institute of Pharmacy in Regensburg, Bavaria, which belongs to the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, accommodates around 560 pharmacy students. The course starts with 137 places in the winter semester. The institute includes Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry I and II, Pharmaceutical Biology, and Pharmacology and Toxicology. The clinical pharmacy working group is part of the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology. In cooperation with the pharmacy of the university clinic, there is an extensive range of clinical pharmacy options for working with scientific databases. In addition, compulsory elective internships are offered in the university clinic in cooperation with the clinic's pharmacy and medicine. In the field of pharmaceutical biology there is the possibility to take part in international botanical excursions.

University of Saarland

Saarland University is located in the capital Saarbrücken. With 233 pharmacy students, the university is one of the smaller pharmaceutical locations alongside Leipzig and Heidelberg. 32 students are accepted per semester. In addition to chemistry and the biological and materials sciences, the field of pharmacy belongs to the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology III. There are chairs in pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, bio-organic chemistry, pharmaceutical biology, biopharmacy and pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical biotechnology and clinical pharmacy, among others. A professor from the Medical Faculty, who is also a co-opted member of the Faculty of Science and Technology III, is responsible for teaching pharmacology and toxicology. At the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) - the first publicly funded research institute in Germany that is explicitly dedicated to pharmacy - students can work as a student assistant, complete their elective internship or part of their practical year. The Helmholtz Institute was founded in 2009 by the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI) Braunschweig and the Saarland University.

Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen

A good 600 prospective pharmacists are studying in the picturesque student town of Tübingen. Once a year, 140 first-year students can start their pharmacy studies. This means that Tübingen has the third largest first winter semester - only in Marburg and Halle are more students enrolled for the winter semester. The Pharmaceutical Institute is part of the Department of Pharmacy and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The institute includes the four disciplines of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Biology, Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, as well as Pharmacology, Toxicology and Clinical Pharmacy. Together with the Natural Science and Medical Institute (NMI) there is also a professorship for pharmaceutical biotechnology. In the teaching of clinical pharmacy, case studies are worked on with patients, clinicians and pharmacologists.

In addition to the classic pharmacy course, the university also offers a master’s course in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies.

Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg

Würzburg is one of the four universities in Bavaria that offer the course in pharmacy. Twice a year 45 students can begin their studies, the number of students is around 390. The Institute for Pharmacy and Food Chemistry is part of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. For the subject of pharmacy, the institute has a chair for pharmaceutical technology and biopharmacy and a chair for pharmaceutical chemistry, which also includes clinical pharmacy. The Würzburg Pharmacy was one of the first in Germany to set up a professorship for clinical pharmacy in 2000. In the elective subject clinical pharmacy, project-oriented work with patients is offered. The Chair of Pharmaceutical Biology is part of the Faculty of Biology; The teaching of pharmacology is carried out by the Chair of Pharmacology (belonging to the Medical Faculty). Those who have successfully completed their studies in pharmacy can take a one-year master’s course called FOKUS Pharmacy at the University of Würzburg. "FOKUS" stands for "research-oriented, compressed university degree program". The students should be given in-depth knowledge of scientific work and qualifications for pharmaceutical-scientific fields of activity. The focus should be on medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical technology or pharmaceutical biology.
