Research focus:

1. Cavitating currents and prediction of cavitation-induced erosion

  • Investigation of cavitation phenomena in diesel injectors, on ship propellers and in canal currents
  • Development of models for the quantitative prediction of erosion risks due to cavitation (spatial and temporal development of the damage)
  • Investigation of the influence of dissolved gas on cavitation
  • Analysis of the interaction of cavitating flows with turbulent fluctuations and moving geometries (opening and closing of injectors and valves)
  • Estimation of the influence of cavitation on breaking free jets

    • Resolution of collapse-induced shock waves (> 10000 bar)

1.2 Cavitation in diesel injector systems

As part of various research projects, individual assemblies in diesel injector systems are examined. This includes both the control area and the front injector area.

Cavitation in control rooms

Identification and prediction of areas at risk of erosion in complex internal flows.

Cavitation in control throttles

Investigation of the interaction of turbulence with cavitation in control throttles using wall-resolved LES under different outlet pressures.

Modeling of the entire system (including movable geometries)

Simulation of flows in closing valves and injectors with dynamic needle lift using immersed boundary methods for weakly compressible flows.
